Creating a magazine layout through In Design

Hello! Today i am going to share a In Design tutorial. This tutorial is totally different with the previous posts, it is about how to design a magazine layout instead of retouching a photo via photoshop. As my major is advertising, the skills of typography and printing are the principle elements for my future work. Therefore, having a skillful technique of using In Design is so important to me. After watching a useful tutorial from youtube, I would like to share the steps with you.

Here is the final slides of my design:

Step1: Open a new document of InDesign -> Insert the number of pages to 3 -> adjust the bleed edge to 5mm ( The bleed is the part on the side of a document that gives the printer a small amount of space to account for movement
of the paper )

Step2 : Select Rectangle Frame Tool -> add on page two and page three

Step3: Click ” Swatches”, choose the click color you want and click on that box you have added on step two -> You may also adjust the opacity

Step4: Click File -> Place-> Select the photo you downloaded from internet -> Adjust it to the left-center postion on the layout

Step5: Select Type Tool -> Type” Cupcakes”-> Adjust the size to 45pt -> Change the font to ” Braggadocio” -> Change the color font to white

Step6: Type another text on page three( A big I) -> Adjust the size to 230pt -> Change the font to Minion Pro -> Change to white color

Step7:Insert a text box under” Cupcakes”-> Click Type -> Fill with Placeholer text -> Font (Minion Pro) -> Size: 12pt -> Select Swatces and change it to white

Step 8: Type another text box next to the text “I” -> am hungry. Can you left a cupcake for me? -> Make sure the height of the box is same with the tex “I” -> Font: Minion Pro -> Size: 35pt

Step9: Type a big text box under the heading -> like the previous step -> Click Text ( Fill with Placeholer text -> Font (Minion Pro) -> Size: 14 pt -> Change the color to white

Step10: If you want to make the long pargraph to two columns…Hightlight all the text -> Click the right side box (with an arrow which is pointing at the bottom) -> Select Span Columns-> Change the paragraph layout to “Split Column” -> Change Sub- colums to “2”

Step11: Choose Ellipse Tool -> Draw a pink circle by pressing the shift key (make sure the porportion is accurate) -> adjust the opacity to 60% -> Place it to the postion as the following image

Step12: To add a page numbers on all of your slides-> Click on the Master Page-> Select Text-> Insert Special Character-> Markers -> Current Page number

Finally we are done!! Hope this tutorial can help you start to use In Design if you are a beginner.

Creating Terminators’ face through Photoshop

Hello everyone! Today i would like to share the tutorial which is about making terminators’ face via Photoshop. After I have learned this effect from the Youtube video, I have add some other elements in order to create different visual feeling, and i also added a super red lip for Angelina Jolie!! NOW i am going to show you all the steps in the following paragraphs.

Here is the final image:

Step1: Insert the picture of Angelina Jolie -> Insert a picture of terminator on a new layerImage

Step2: Adjust the opacity of the terminator to about 50% -> adjust the size which can match with the Angelina Jolie’s face accurately

Step3: Change the opacity back to 100%-> Click layer -> Layer mask-> Hide all -> A black white small layer will appear next to that layer

Step4: Use white brush to draw the part you want-> or  you can use black brush to delete some part ( To make it more looks like terminator, i just draw the left eye and right eye)

Step5: Click Ctrl+E to merge the background and layer one-> layer -> New adjustment layer -> Adjust the curve -> make the face darker -> Use Dodge Tool to lighten the left face and left part of nose

Step6: Click Filter -> Artistic -> Choose one of the suitable effect which suits the image (I choose ” Grain”)Image

Step7: Select Color Balance -> Turn the Blue to +100 -> Turn the Cyan to -100 -> The color toneof the face will turn to violet/blue -> You can also apply other adjustment to make the photo looks good

Step8: Select a Background from internet-> Place it at the bottom of all the layers

Step9: Click back to the terminator layer->  Use Quick Selection Tool-> Cut away the original background of Angelina Julie

Step10: Click Layer -> Apply Inner Shadow-> add a inner shadow for the face to make it looks more three-dimensional

And you also can add a beautiful red lip for Angelina Julie!!

Step11: Create a new layer-> Use red brush to paint on her lip-> Change the blend mode to overlay

Creating frozen text with photoshop

My third tutorial is about how to create frozen text through photoshop. It is a cool effect that can be easily create. The final image that i created is placed below, this interesting text can add on different background and it is a kind of way to make a focus point on the photo.

This is the final image:

Step1: Open a new background with the size you want-> use Paint bucket tool to create a fully black background.

Step2: Insert a text box on the background-> Change the font to “Times New Roman”-> Adjust the size to 100pt-> Type the text you want

Step3: Click Edit -> Transform -> Rotate the text to 90 degree ( This step is used to create the effect in the correct direction afterwards)

Step4: Click Filter -> Stylize -> Wind ( An effect like the wind fading out from the word)-> Then choose “wind” in method part, and choose the direction is” From the right”-> Click OK!

Step5: Rotate the text to the original direction-> Click Filter -> Click twice of “wind”( in order to stronger the outcome of the effect)

Step6: Click Layer-> Layer Mask-> Select Outer Glow and Color Overlay-> Change all the color to light blue

Step7: Duplicate the frozen text layer once-> Click Layer again-> layer style-> Untick ” Color overlay” and ” Outer Glow”->  Select ” Bevel and Emboss”-> Go to structure and change the technique to “Chisel Soft”-> Change the depth to 60% -> Select Pattern overlay -> Choose the most suitable pattern -> adjust the Opacity to 80% -> Select Gradient Overlay-> Change the blend mode to overlay

Step8: Click the Frozen copy layer-> Adjust the blend mode to “Overlay”-> Adjust the text shape that you want

Step9: Find a photo from internet or a photo that was taken by yourself ->Insert a background which suits your text

Step10: Place it under the frozen and frozen copy layer (make sure the text is on the top of the photo)
